I had the opportunity to watch a 30-minute YouTube video (“I Am Second…”) last weekend on the trials and tribulations of the widely successful Duck Dynasty family, The Robertsons. The piece featured the patriarch, Phil Robertson, along with his wife Kay, youngest son Jep, and grandson Reed.
What resonated most with me while watching the video was the tremendous obstacles that the entire family had to overcome to put them into the position of fame and fortune that they currently enjoy today. This is particularly true of Phil and Kay’s tumultuous early years together, WAY before Duck Commander and the Duck Dynasty success. Many people would have just parted ways instead of hanging on and “making it work.”
Key takeaways from the Robertson family can be summarized as follows:
- Faith in God and Putting Him First In Everything (Belief)
- Putting Others Wants/Needs Before Personal Wants/Needs (Compassion)
- Believing That People Can Truly Change. Sometimes They Just Need A “Nudge” In The Right Direction (Consultation & Intervention)
Especially during this Holiday Season, the world needs more caring, compassion, and giving TO others vs what can be received FROM others! Be an agent of change, let’s focus less on “selfies” and more on “un-selfies”!
Try “to be second” in certain circumstances. Uplift others. It just may have a tremendous and positive effect on the quality of your everyday life.
Isn’t that what the spirit of the season should really be about?
That’s the bottomline…
“Change…Part Nature…Part Opportunity”
